Charlie Phelps already had more than 20 years of self-managed auto body repair and auto painting experience when he started working at Smithfield Motors in 1975. After three years of working for someone else, he was tired of it.
At the shop's 30th anniversary, his daughter Debbie Livesay and her husband Johnny run the shop with one other employee, Tim Woodard.
The job is different than it once was, with the shop competing with the demands of insurance companies and the constantly evolving technology of automobiles. When Charlie started the business, it was just about fixing cars.
Debbie, 54, now runs the shop with Johnny. She started working there in 1984 after her sister Yvonne took another job. Charlie has a third daughter Teresa.
When Debbie first started, Charlie taught her bookkeeping and how to do an estimate. Johnny has taught her some of his auto body and paint skills as well.
Charlie stuck around business so long because "it was a living", he said, and despite the fact that he was "working like hell."
Cars are made out of aluminum now, so Johnny's talent at shaping metal in older cars doesn't get as much practice as it used to.
Johnny said that he doesn't enjoy the work as much as he did before.
Debbie doesn't know what is next for the shop.
"The future is so unpredictable," she said. Her sons Shawn and Brad worked there for a little while in school, but they aren't interested in taking over. Her grandson Kelly has expressed interest, but he is just 14. She doesn't know how long she'll be running the business. If she lasts as long as Charlie, she will make it till the shop's 52nd anniversary.
"She says she can still smile about it," Debbie said of her mother's take on her marriage to Charlie's Bodyshop, like his marriage, has some good years left in it.
